  • Dominica Devestated by Maria and How it Affects Our Community

I wasn't sure how to say this or even if I should post this, but I am going to anyway.

On Sept 19th the tiny but beautiful island nation of Dominica was hit and devastated by the category 5 hurricane Maria. In 2003 I was the Operations Director for a very large teleservices company on the island of Grenada in the West Indies. That island was hit and virtually wiped out by a category 3 hurricane Ivan. After a couple of months reorganizing things on the island without electricity, phones, Internet, running water, the basic necessities we all probably take for granted everyday, the company I worked for relocated me to Dominica to open a new center.

Grenada's infrastructure, a much bigger island, was based on tourists and spices. Dominica, in comparison, while growing still has that small island charm. This is important because Grenada had tons of big hotels and lots of industry and Dominica had lovely homes and only a few hotels. They call it the nature island, because its the only island Chris Columbus would still recognize today.

Grenada was left in shambles with 70% of all buildings with extensive damage or destroyed and Ivan was a category 3. Dominica was hit with a full-on category 5 (sustained winds 160+mph) and as of today, still very little information is coming off the island. We know there has been at least 9 confirmed deaths the last I heard, but as many as 70 others non-confirmed. There are reports of entire villages washed away with many persons missing. Its a strong possibility Dominica infrastructure has suffered a 90% or more loss.

The limited pictures and videos I've been able to see is complete devastation and my heart breaks.

How does this affect our community? There's a couple ways actually. As I lived and worked on the island for nearly a year I became very close to many friends I still speak with often. The first, and possibly the dearest to my heart is Kate, the other is Mickaelia from AD who lives there as well. I've been unable to find any news about Kate personally, but I do know the area she lived suffered widespread damage sandwiched between other neighboring villages left unharmed. Go figure.

As you can probably understand I am deeply concerned for her well being and have reached out to other family members in an effort to determine her situation. My attempts so far have been unsuccessful but I promise I will keep everyone informed. On one hand I wish her Caribbean accent wasn't as strong as it was because I could share her with everyone else on the phone. On the other hand its so freaking adorable. The first time idle spoke with her he asked me what language she was speaking. They are going to need a lot of help, a lot of time and a whole lot of prayers to get them through this.

Its funny how these things work, but when I lived in Dominica I was much closer to Mickaelia than I was to Kate. I'll always consider her a close friend and as such respect that she is happily married and still works for ad. We haven't spoken as much as we used to, but still I am also concerned for her and her family. From what I remember the last place she lived is reporting severe damage to all homes.

Unfortunately I've not been able to get a hold of anyone I know there. After many attempts I had finally gotten a hold of my closest friend only to learn he was currently in Trinidad. I asked him if he heard anything about his family, our friends and he could only choke out "its bad!".

Kate is a very private person, but I can handle her wrath when we get her back the good Lord willing. You do not want to be on the receiving end of a Kate scorn, but I'll take it any day over not knowing. If anybody still visits ptalk and sees anything about Mickaelia and this terrible terrible situation and can keep me informed I will be grateful. In the meantime I'm doing whatever I can to find out about our Kate.

Please, if you are the praying type, please keep our Kate and Mickaelia in your prayers. If you don't believe in that, send them both positive thoughts.

The second way (certainly not nearly as important as Kate is to me) is customer support. Bobbi and myself are in the meantime filling in and doing what we can to get through this. Please be patient with us.

  • Security Vulnerability Detected and Corrected!
    by XSteveO
    Dear Community Members,

End of September 2019 a security vulnerability was detected for VBulletin 5 (VB5) that would allow hackers to inject bad-stuff into a community forum such as ours. The hack, a zero-day vulnerability, allows the hacker to gain control over the server the forum is on. As such, patches have been issued and already installed on our discoverXS community forum.

All of the Aser Gruppe servers and websites use a series of security measures that monitor,...
