[The] CPC Regional Manager Sam [C.] served as a volunteer for the annual Autism Speaks Walk ...in downtown Chicago on October 21. Sam has volunteered for this event for 12 consecutive years.​

“I [want to give] back in as many ways as I can, and I know autism is something that affects many people around the world,” Sam said. “It is a pleasure to help out at this event that brings people together to work toward a common goal.”

The event raises funds [for Autism Speaks.] The walk is also a time for participants to celebrate their loved ones with autism, connect with others, share stories, and meet local service providers and other event sponsors.

This year Sam was a flagger, which involved making sure bikers and walkers stayed in their designated lanes along the 3.1-mile course.

“It’s an important role because it helps keep people safe during the walk,” Sam said.

The 2023 Autism Speaks Walk raised [a significant amount,] bringing the organization one step closer to ensuring people with autism can reach their full potential.

“I enjoy seeing the joy on the faces of the participants of all ages,” Sam said. “Their enthusiasm gives me a warm feeling and motivates me to return as a volunteer year after year.”

On Saturday, June 4, 2017, Service members will walk in support of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder...

Across the Service, different Divisions have held fundraising events, from a BBQ at Parking Enforcement East to a silent auction and pizza lunch at police headquarters, as well as several [local] restaurants donating a portion of sales on May 26....

Last year, we witnessed Staff Sergeant Peter Troup’s autistic daughter, Carly, who was pleading to sing the national anthems at a Blue Jays game. Her dream became true due to a hashtag (#letcarlysing). The walk also included Chief Mark Saunders talking to the public about his so, Graham, who is also on the Autism spectrum. We are making huge strides educating people about Autism and how those who live with it are no better or worse than someone without the disorder.

...On the Saturday of the walk, there will be [many] members from the public who lace up their shoes and take part in the ...[Autism Speaks Walk]. Volunteers [are going to] hold signs with facts about Autism, and cold drinks and as well as snacks will be handed out as walkers cross the finish line. Whether [someone] has Autism or is just looking to [be there for] the cause, the walk will raise awareness and education for the public. For those walking, it shows solidarity and friendship for [those individuals impacted by Autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.] If you are looking for resources regarding Autism, or want to make a donation, it doesn’t take long to look for the Autism Speaks Canada website. This walk holds a special place in my heart. I walk for those who have been there for me through thick and thin. I was going through the hardest days of my life and, if it wasn’t for [them], I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I joined the Service in November 2015 and I haven’t let Autism stop me from doing my job. Some days are better than others, but the Service members I work with are very understanding and accept me for who I am

It [am going to] be the second year I’m participating in the walk and I [am going to] be joined by my parents and sister.

On June 4, 2017, we [are going to] walk as one, all for giving back to those who have [Autism Spectrum Disorders] or are on the spectrum. Staff Sergeant Troup [is going to] walk for Carly, Chief Saunders [is going to] walk for Graham and other Service members [are going to] join in to give back to those in their community...

Big Joe and [the Ottawa CFL team's cheerleaders] were in attendance for Ottawa’s Autism Speaks Canada Walk on June 4th in Kanata. They cheered on and high-fived the participants, while the Cheer team lead the walkers in a pre-walk warm-up. The walk is a way to bring people together to raise awareness and help raise funds for services for those with autism.

[A local television station's] Michael Williams served as master of ceremonies for the event [where the television station] is a proud sponsor.

The walk is the world's largest fundraising event dedicating to improving the lives of people on the autism spectrum and letting them know that they are not alone. It brings together people with autism and [those individuals closest to them.]

It's something many people — including the walk co-chairs — look forward to each year.

For Al and Helen Taylor of [New Haven County], Saturday’s Autism Speaks fundraiser walk represents a chance for the community to celebrate inclusivity and support individuals with autism.

“As a parent with a child on the spectrum, this is really a day for our community to be themselves,” Helen Taylor said.

The couple is celebrating the event’s 10-year anniversary and will be walking together as part of Chase and Friends, a team named in honor of their 19-year-old son, Chase, who has autism. Registration for the 1.5 mile walk begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Library Park, 267 Grand St., with the opening ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Donations will support autism-based research grants and groups including the Focus Center for Autism in Canton.

The Taylors’ connection to the walk goes beyond the 10 years it has been in [New Haven County.] Originally members of the Chase and Friends in Hartford’s Autism Speaks walk, the Taylors and some of their friends were looking to bring the walk to [New Haven County.] After contacting the New England chapter of Autism Speaks, members from the national organization came to the city. After seeing the local support for the organization, the New England chapter approved establishment of Waterbury’s own walk.

Melissa Serrano-Adorno, a member of the Waterbury Board of Education Commission in Waterbury, will join the walk with her son, Julian, 22, who has autism. Serrano-Adorno, who is on the Autism Speaks Walk committee with the Taylors, says the event is a great way to raise awareness for autism in the community. For people like her son, who struggles to gain employment, the event brings support and joy.

“When you see these kids and how happy they are, it makes a difference,” Serrano-Adorno said. She will be walking as part of “Juji’s Team,” which is inspired by her son’s nickname. She said the event serves as a great way for parents of children with autism to meet and network.

Beyond the walk itself, [sensory] friendly activities such as face painting, balloon characters, games and live music will be available. [The local television station's] Amanda Raus will serve as the event’s host and Brianna Denski, actress of the character, June in the animated film, “Wonder Park” will make a guest appearance...

When the Weltens attended the Autism Association of WA’s Autism in Cricket [introductory] Session last year, they had no idea of the lasting impact the morning would have on their son...

The 8-year-old’s older brother already played for his local cricket club ...but [those closest to their son] were looking for ways to assist their club in supporting [their son's] additional needs.

The [introductory] Session provided the Weltens with all the information they needed to work with the club, and Billy’s mum Natalie said it was refreshing to have the club be so receptive to children of all abilities.

“It is extremely important for the children to see each other engaging and having fun playing cricket together as Community sport is a tricky one to combat within the autism spectrum because some people struggle with the social aspect, along with the expectations if you lose,” she said.

“Although cricket is a team sport, it also enables kids to set individual goals and allow themselves flexibility within the game and the positions they play on field.

“The Autism in Cricket Come and Try Session was amazing last year, and it was lovely to see the Autism Association Therapists and friendly faces as we walked in.

“It was also very beneficial speaking with other parents on the day and it was great to see a few of the club representatives walking around and making the [individuals impacted by Autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders] comfortable.”

Natalie would recommend the session to [others] with children with autism as it encourages opportunities to experience the fun, friendships, and health benefits that cricket can provide.

“The main reason I would encourage [attend] attend the Come and Try Session is because it is fully inclusive,” she continued.

“Being at the WACA Ground surrounded by other parents who have autistic children and who understand exactly what every other parent goes through with the challenges we face felt like a really safe and non-judgemental space.”

A South Florida community [united] for a special autism awareness walk.

[Many] people gathered at Doral Central Park to take part in the 2019 Autism Speaks Miami Walk, Sunday morning.

Participants said they are looking to create inclusion for people who live with autism.

“They wouldn’t change their children for the world. All they want is for you to understand them,” said Allan Young, chairman of the board for the South Florida Ford Dealers. “Autism is a unique, unique syndrome.”

The sensory-friendly walk-a-thon helped raise funds for Autism Speaks, now in its 20th year.

The event is part of World Autism Month, a global movement to increase understanding and acceptance of people in the autism spectrum.

“It is very encouraging to see this amount of people here,” said [the] executive director of Autism Speaks South Florida. “We are fundraising in order for Autism Speaks to be able to continue the research, [and] the advocacy efforts, ...not just here in South Florida but around the country.”

South Florida Ford Dealers showed some extra love for the cause on top of their major donation.

“We’re gonna give an additional $5 all day long to everything you post, so take your cameras out,” said Young.

The auto dealers gave an additional $5 to Autism Speaks for every photo of the walk posted on social media Sunday with the hashtag #Ford4Autism.

“We are here to organically help these people, help the children get what they need, because as a father of a child with autism in the spectrum, it’s something that you have to [make an effort for],” said Young.

Officials said the walk raised [a substantial amount] to ...enhance the lives of those living with autism.
