To the southwest, San Diego, California is also home to an annual Walk for Autism Speaks...
Every year, the sorority Alpha Xi Delta contributes to the San Diego organization Autism Speaks. Last year they raised $33,000 where 100 percent of the proceeds went to Autism Speaks.

“Since we started the AmaXIng challenge event, we have raised [more than] $160,000, which is the highest cumulative amount raised for philanthropy in greek life at CSUSM,” said Philanthropy Vice President of Alpha Xi Delta, Caroline Cherry.

Alpha Xi Delta’s hosts events that help fundraise and spread awareness to the San Diego and CSUSM community. [This includes] the San Diego autism speaks walk.

“…Every year we host a color run in [autumn,] last year was the first year and we’re hoping to make it an annual event, in the future,” said Cherry.

April being World Autism Awareness Month, Alpha Xi Delta walked around campus to

“light it up blue,” with a banner to spread awareness of what they do, and why.

President of Alpha Xi Delta, Stacy Van Blerck explained the reason behind fundraising for Autism Speaks.

“...so every dollar we help fundraise and donate can make such a big impact [for individuals closest to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders,]” said Van Blerck.

Lesley Ibarra the Vice President Finance and Operations said the sorority is unique because of the ...sisterhood bond they have.

“...our sisterhood is so close and we bond very well and having this philanthropy, honestly brings us together every time, because we raise awareness for something so big, that could [help] a lot of children in this country,” said Ibarra.

According to the csusm.edu website, it said that, “Alpha Xi Delta is a recognized member of the [fraternity/sorority] community on [CSUSM] campus since 1995.” They currently have 114 members.

In order to join Alpha Xi Delta, Van Blerck said freshman can register in [February] for formal recruitment...

...[Caroline] said[:]“It’s really easy to say that we raise all this money every year and it’s fun to write the number down and say how much we raised, but… I think that it is so impactful to see the actual [individuals affected by Autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders] that we are helping,” she said.

The subject of the post from about a week ago was Ottawa, Ontario, Canada being home to an annual Walk for Autism Speaks Canada. Autism Speaks is North America's leading Autism science and advocacy organisation.

Brae Szarek is only 11 years old, but she's quickly becoming an advocate for her little brother by spreading kindness, knowledge and awareness about autism.

Brae and her mom, Colleen, spoke with ABC7 on Tuesday. They are a big part of the Autism Speaks Walk, which is happening on Saturday...

Brae told us about her 7-year-old brother ...and what she wants other children to know about autism.

Colleen talked about Mac's diagnosis and what led her to get testing. She talked about some of the things that may be more difficult for him.

Opening ceremonies for the Autism Speaks Walk begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
