To the east, Downeast Horizons is an Ellsworth, Maine-based nonprofit that attempts to get individuals with various challenges to live complete and fulfilling lives. This includes children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the area...
Downtown Ellsworth transformed into a sea of red as children and adults with autism took to the streets to share why they were walking.

"We could raise the awareness so that everyone could see it," said Anthony Zambrano, executive director of Downeast Horizons.

"It's a really good feeling to know everybody is raising awareness and [involved in the Walk]," said [CS], a participant in the walk.

Participants and [those individuals closest to them] started at Knowlton Park before making their way downtown to Main Street and looping back onto School Street.

Walkers were enthusiastic the whole way, cheering and even receiving some friendly honks from drivers.

"Awesome. Fun. I like it and new friends here that I like a lot," said Doug Dow, a participant in the walk.

Proceeds from the event will help further educate staff members at Downeast Horizons about the needs of people who are on the spectrum.

Zambrano says it will also help fund activities for children in the organization.

"Early intervention makes a big difference in the lives of these folks. The younger you help someone with autism, the quicker these behaviors can change so they can fit into society," said Zambrano.

Having two decades of healthcare experience, Downeast Horizons staff member Theresa Andrews says she walks in this event to show why people with autism should always be accepted and treated with respect.

"I have had the funnest times of my life with these people, and it's very important to me that they have good lives. That they're happy, they're healthy and that they are treated well," said Andrews.

                      [CS] agrees.

"Everyone's different in society and it's important to recognize the ones who have a [challenge including Autism] and do everything to help them in society, and help them learn the same way we do," [he] said.

The Autism Society of Greater Akron really knows how to throw a party.

[Many] runners and walkers assembled on Saturday morning in downtown Akron for the nonprofit group’s fourth annual Akron Autism 5K Run and Walk, a family-friendly event.

There were cheerleaders from Springfield High School, a martial arts exhibition by students from Akron’s Summit Academy Schools, music from the local Steel Angels Steelband, inflated bounce houses, the children’s band Zobapago, costumed characters, face painting and refreshments.

[Other] supporters, vendors and volunteers showed up for the event, described as the largest charity affair staged at Akron’s Lock 3 Park.

This year’s event raised more than $90,000 for the local group and helped raise awareness of autism, said Executive Director Laurie Cramer. It is the group’s No. 1 fundraising event.

“We’re just thrilled with the results,” she said.

The runners covered five kilometers (3.1 miles) on downtown streets and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The walkers had a 1-mile course. Some pushed strollers and some had dogs on leashes.

The winning male-female runners were Jeff Beatty, 18, of Wadsworth, with a time of 16 minutes and 50 seconds and Melissa Vince, 24, of Canton, with a time of 20 minutes and 2 seconds.

The event is marked by the teams or crews wearing matching T-shirts in various colors and with different messages in personal support of individuals with autism....

From [the entire month of April,] the society invites participants to honor the heroes in their lives, and to "walk or run for that person who makes your life extra special." Participants choose the day and location for their walk or run.

The funds raised through the [Autism] Walk go directly toward the society’s programs for [individuals impacted by Autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and also those closest to them like] caretakers and those who work with them....

Edmonton [-based individuals affected by autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders] took [part in a] walk for autism in Rundle Park Sunday morning.

These ‘Walk now for Autism Speaks Canada’ events – held in [many] cities across the country – are the [organisation's] largest fundraisers.

Edmonton-Wetaskiwin MP Mike Lake, whose 10-year-old son Jaden was diagnosed with autism when he was two, highlighted the financial significance of the event.

“The target is $150,000 … I think it’s been pretty successful given the economic circumstances in Alberta right now,” Lake said. “Money does go to important research and community services, grants, or local organizations.”

However, this walk isn’t just to raise money. It’s an opportunity for [those individual impacted by Autism to be there for one another], but especially, for the rest of the community to show solidarity to those who have been affected by this [condition.]

“It's all of those other people that ...walk side-by-side, and really show that important [backing of individuals affected by Autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders,]" Lake said...
