Crystal Lettinga says she's learned more from her twin sister than from her college classes.

"You would never know she has autism," says Crystal, of her twin, Coral Lettinga. "You're like, she looks just you and I. We're the exact same person because we are twins, but we are different. She's nonverbal. So making public situations a little more difficult, not knowing what she needs."

For the past seven years, Crystal has walked with Hope Network's annual Bridge Walk for Autism, alongside [many others] who usually take part in the event, crossing the Blue Bridge near downtown Grand Rapids [for] Autism Acceptance Month.

[Applied Behaviour Analysis] Connections once again participated in the Resource Fair for the Autism Speaks Walk in Ottawa this past Sunday on June 2nd, 2019. Today, communities all across Canada are commemorating World Autism Awareness Day for the first time.

At noon, Toronto City Hall raised a commemorative flag to mark the day, and the CN Tower was lit blue as part of Autism Speaks' "Light It Up Blue" campaign.

[Many] towns and cities in Ontario are also participating, with students taking part in fundraising activities to help children with autism.

...Suzanne Jaconson, president of QuickStart, a charity that assists with earlier intervention [for individuals impacted by Autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders,] tells CFRA Ottawa[:]
"People with autism live full lives so we now have seniors with autism that we need to provide care for."

While treatments and therapies help symptoms of autism, there is no cure.

"If you've met one child with autism, you've met one child with autism. And that’s it," Trudy Richards of the Autism Ontario Windsor Essex County Chapter tells the Windsor Star. "Autism has many different faces. Every child has potential."

In 2007, the UN declared April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day. In November 2012, the House of Commons passed an act that made April 2 World Autism Awareness Day in Canada, too.

Edmonton MP Mike Lake tells Canada AM that Canada still faces "significant challenges" when it comes to supporting children with autism.

"I think globally we’re doing well compared to other countries, but there are significant challenges. It depends on [what part of Canada] you’re in," he says.

...Marg Spoelstra of Autism Ontario says these flag-raising events across the province are important in drawing attention to the issue.

"If nothing else, [many] communities have been engaged and are recognizing that people in their communities have autism," she tells the Toronto Star.

"It opens the door for us to then speak about the more difficult issue, which is: How do we create a more inclusive society for people with differences, particularly the difference of [Autism Spectrum Disorders]?"

[National Hockey League] goalie Pierre Groulx's 4-year-old son, Leo, is autistic.

...“We want to make other parents realize that autism is not something to be scared of. It’s not curable but it’s livable. You can live with autism and function very highly with it," Groulx tells the Montreal Gazette.

"Wendy and I aren’t doing this for us," Groulx says of the initiative. "We've gotten the help we need and we’re on the right track."

"What we're doing is trying to spread the word. Leo can come into the bedroom and say, 'Hi, Mommy, hi, Daddy, I had a good night, I have to go pee now.' He didn’t do that six months ago. It’s just so amazing. It brings tears to our eyes when we get to see and hear that."

"Today, we’re very grateful that we have the opportunity to [be there for] other people," he [says.]

Life with Autism can be challenging for [children] but one local organization is working to make those challenges a little easier.

Sarah Bruce is the mother of 5-year-old Isaiah. Two years ago he may not have been able to participate in Heartspring's annual Autism Care Walk. He's Autistic and [only about two years ago he] couldn't talk, he played alone and lacked social skills.

"Today we're walking because we want everyone to know how much Heartspring has helped our son," [she] says...

The Autism Care Walk raises money for Heartsprings programs, including scholarships that allow [children] like Isaiah to be a part of them.
​
"...it's ...a time for us to raise funds for our autism services programs," says Rachel Mayberry.

Those services like summer camps and social clubs help some [children] say their [first] words or be invited to their first birthday party.

Vicki Hayes works in Heartspring'ss cafeteria and has seen these developments firsthand. She's retiring on Monday but says she'll never forget the [children] she's met over the years.

"I call them my [children.] I do it for my [children] and Heartspring and I do it for all autistic [children] because they need this. They need this really bad," says Hayes.

Big Joe and [the Ottawa CFL team's cheerleaders] were in attendance for Ottawa’s Autism Speaks Canada Walk on June 4th in Kanata. They cheered on and high-fived the participants, while the [cheerleaders took] the walkers [through] a pre-walk warm-up. The walk is a way to bring people together to raise awareness and help raise funds for services for those with autism.

On April 6, the Milwaukee Bucks took steps to change the future of those in the Wisconsin Autism Community by hosting the Autism Speaks walk at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The Milwaukee Walk Now for Autism Speaks event raised [substantial funds] for autism research and gathered [many] individuals for the [fundraising and Autism awareness event.] This year marked [the] first time the BMO Harris Bradley Center hosted the fifth annual event for the Milwaukee community.

Those in attendance were treated to an appearance from Bucks guard Brandon Jennings as he thanked [them] during the opening ceremonies.

So many great things are happening with autism research, outreach and community engagement that it’s hard to fit it all into one event.

“We would need twice, thrice the size of this room if we included everything that we are doing in autism research,” said Maya Lopez, M.D., [University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS)] associate professor and Arkansas Autism Treatment Network principal investigator.

Lopez was referring to the research posters lining the walls of Chairman’s Hall at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, [a venue that] hosted the Aug. 9 town hall event, a partnership between UAMS, the Arkansas Autism Treatment Network, Autism Speaks and Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

In addition to mingling with researchers, participants heard from speakers about the Arkansas Autism Treatment Network, two autism programs called CoBALT and ECHO... Together they [started] off the 2016 Arkansas Autism Speaks Walk and were entertained by performances from the Cheer City United Kronos Team, featuring special needs cheerleaders.

Ed Buckner, chief meteorologist with KTHV Channel 11 and parent to a daughter on the autism spectrum, emceed the event and said that Arkansas is lucky to have an Autism Treatment Network site in Arkansas. The grant was received by Arkansas Children’s Research Institute and the clinic is held at the UAMS James L. Dennis Developmental Center. It is one of only 14 such sites in North America. [Arkansas Autism Treatment Network] sites have the ...goal of [working together and] sharing research and improving outcomes for autism patients and [those individuals closest to them.]

“Through Autism Speaks and [the Arkansas Autism Treatment Network,] we continue to make a big difference in treatment outcomes for children with autism and on the autism spectrum,” Buckner said.

...Echoing the concept of “We’re all in this together,” Richard Jacobs, M.D., chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at UAMS and pediatrician-in-chief at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, shifted the spotlight to fundraising for autism research.

...Dawn Itzkowitz, Arkansas Autism Speaks Walk chairwoman, [started] off the 2016 [Autism Speaks] walk with the help of the crowd.

“It’s an amazing event,” Itzkowitz said...

The Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest awareness and fundraising event for autism. The Arkansas event is at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 1... The 2016 goal is to raise $115,500 [for] research and treatment programs...

Yesterday, [Mike Lake, Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Wetaskiwin]​ gave his annual one-minute World Autism Awareness Day statement in the Canadian House of Commons, with his son, Jaden, watching from the gallery.

Mike’s statement read:

“Mr. Speaker, yesterday was World Autism Awareness Day and the anniversary of my son Jaden’s diagnosis at age two.

Autism comes with no end of labels, and in Jaden’s case, one of those labels is non-verbal.

...There are few things I know for sure, but I know this. My 23-year-old non-verbal son has something to say. He says it in the simple words he types or writes. He says it with a sideways smile, a mysterious giggle, a whimsical look and sometimes with heartfelt tears.

And if you have the patience to just wait on him, quietly be present with him, joining him in the moment – in his moment – he will touch your heart in the most magical of ways.

You [are going to] hear his voice and you [are] never [going to] forget what he has to say.”...

St.Amant Foundation has proudly partnered for an eigth year with the Manitoba Moose for an Autism Acceptance campaign [for the] St.Amant Autism Programs. The 2024 Autism Acceptance Game is being held on Saturday, April 6, 2024! [Individuals impacted by Autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, who are part of] St.Amant’s Autism Program [are going to] be invited to do a puck-drop and participate in the ceremony.

Each year since returning to Manitoba for the 2015-16 AHL season, the Manitoba Moose have been proving that they can maintain an entertaining, yet inclusive, atmosphere by hosting what has been known as their Autism Awareness game. The team turns the music down, forgoes the flashy lights, and even has a quiet room for those who need it to create a more inclusive environment for individuals with autism while keeping the action-packed and [sensory]-friendly atmosphere [Manitoba Moose] fans have come to expect at Canada Life Centre.

...In 2022, the Manitoba Moose generously donated $20,000! [Some of the team went] to visit St.Amant’s Early Learning Classrooms and enjoyed an afternoon spending quality time with the children.

...This year's [Autism Speaks] walk [is going to] take place on 11/10/18... As volunteers we [are going to] be helping set up the walk, handing out water along the walk, [giving out] information [to those individuals at the Autism Speaks Walks,] among other tasks. Recommend attire is tennis shoes, and comfortable clothing like shorts and a T-shirt.

Ausome Ottawa is an Ottawa, Ontario, Canada-based nonprofit that attempts to provide cost-free sports programs for children and youth with Autism...

Ausome Ottawa is gearing up for Tamarack Ottawa [Run/Walk] Weekend, one of the charity’s favourite events of the year. Since 2017, children with autism and [those individuals closest to them] from throughout the National Capital Region have come together to walk, run and cheer each other on as Team Ausome, and raise awareness and funds along the way.

Many children with autism face barriers to accessing sport and recreation opportunities due to a lack of training and resources in school and community programs. Ausome Ottawa was founded in 2015 to remove those barriers by creating programs specifically designed to provide a welcoming and supported environment for every child to meaningfully participate and succeed, and at no cost to [individuals impacted by Autism.] It also trains educators, coaches, leagues and facility operators on how to better understand autism and make their own sports and recreation programs more inclusive.

As Executive Director Jamie Logue explains, Ausome Ottawa is more than sports. “We’re about building ...connection and community—on and off the field of play. Where children grow their ...confidence and independence. Where meaningful connections and friendships form between teammates and [the individuals closest to them.] And where we [be there] together as a community to build an autism-inclusive future.”

That’s why Team Ausome is excited to be back for Tamarack Ottawa [Run/Walk] Weekend. “As an official charity partner, we’re running to raise funds to create more spaces in our spring and summer programs, so that more children will get their chance to play too.”

...15-year-old William is one of many Ausome athletes who can’t wait for [the day of the run/walk.] Through years of Run Club and other programs, William has not only learned how to run, he has learned to love it. The subject of the post from about two day ago was Ottawa, Ontario, Canada being home to an annual Walk for Autism Speaks Canada. Autism Speaks is North America's leading Autism science and advocacy organisation.

To the southwest, Atlanta, Georgia is also home to an annual Walk for Autism Speaks...

We would love to have you join us at the 2019 Autism Speaks Walk, ...scheduled [to occur] on Sunday, April 28 at Atlantic Station Pinnacle Lot.

The Walk starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 p.m.

Autism Speaks runs the nation's largest autism walk fundraising event and Marcus Autism Center receives 50% of the funds raised.

I participated in the 2018 Walk with [those closest to me] – and [I'll] be doing so again in 2019—it was lots of fun and for a most worthy cause!
