    • The subject of the post from about three weeks ago was Ottawa, Ontario, Canada being home to an annual Walk for Autism Speaks Canada. Autism Speaks is North America's leading Autism science and advocacy organisation.

To the west, the Autism Society of Oregon is a Multnomah County, Oregon-based nonprofit that attempts to empower individuals affected by Autism. This includes children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Oregon.
Hundreds of Oregon residents gathered at Oaks Amusement Park on Sunday, April 24, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Autism Society of Oregon's "Autism Walk". The ...Walk is held yearly — typically [during] Autism Acceptance Month...

"This is really the first time since 2019 that we've had the community [joining] together again..." remarked Tobi Rates, Executive Director of the organization.

Last year, the society held the event in August, and saw a down-tick in registration as a result of the high summer temperatures, and the virus. In 2020, they were forced to hold the event only virtually. The annual Autism Walk is the society's largest fundraiser and community event of the year — and this year, it raised $50,000, all of which will go to supporting programs in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

A major focus of the day was to create a social outlet for those living with autism. Dozens of vendors shared community resources and information for those who were trying to understand [Autism] — and for [those individual closest to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders] looking for ways for their autistic child to expand their social circle.

..."In my experience, people who are on the autism spectrum or who experience autism are some of the most magical, talented, smart, and gifted humans in general," said camp consultant Elise Renning. "I've been coming to this walk for several years and it continues to grow, grow, and grow. Watching the community [join together for the cause] is outstanding!"

...Leo is 9 years old and lives in Carleton Place, Ontario, with his twin brother ...and his dog... who he loves very much. Leo was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder when he was 2 years old.

Leo says the most challenging things about having autism for him are haircuts, food (and other items that smell really bad), and managing his emotions. The best things about having autism for him are the people that always try their best to get along with him, and being asked to be the ambassador for the Ottawa Autism Speaks walk.

Leo previously participated in an Autism Speaks walk in Montreal, and this will be his third year participating in the Ottawa walk. He says he is “nerve-cited” to be the ambassador of the walk – a word he uses to describe when he is nervous and excited.

Leo’s favourite hobbies include playing video games, watching YouTube, listening to music, jumping, and playing with [his twin brother]. He enjoys swimming, running cross-country, ...and playing soccer, but [he especially enjoys the] dramatic arts. Leo loves drama class and piano lessons, and his [those individuals closest to him enjoy] watching him perform in his recitals.

Leo’s smile and laugh are contagious. He is a bright, funny and charming boy, and [those individuals closest to him,] and [the Ottawa NHL team,] are incredibly grateful for him.

Leo was the Ottawa Walk Ambassador for Autism Speaks Canada in 2019. Please join us in helping create a kinder more inclusive world for people with autism. Show [solidarity with] Leo and other people with autism by donating generously...

When parents are told their child is not developing like other children it is not unusual for parents to go through a range of emotions. They often experience disbelief, denial, anger, worry, even guilt.

But 7Everyday Hero Heidi Wateurs helps provide a bridge so parents understand they are not alone.

In May of this year, [many] people came out to Infinity Park in Glendale for the Autism Speaks Walk. Autism Speaks is a national nonprofit that provides funding for research and education about autism spectrum disorders.

"One third of all children who are affected by autism are going to be nonverbal," Wateurs said.

                                Hence the name Autism Speaks.
"We have got to be their voice. And that's why we're Autism Speaks. We are the families who are talking for them," Wateurs said.

                                And walking for them.

"I walked for my daughter. She is an amazing little girl. She is 13 years old and she is a part of the autism community, Wateurs said.

Wateurs was one of the leading fundraisers for the Denver walk this year.

'I am a single mom. I had no idea what autism was until I got the diagnosis. I was scared. So it became my new mission to go out and raise some money and help families and to help my family," Wateurs said.

...Ironically, the challenges that often come with an autism spectrum disorder can leave [the individuals impacted by Autism] feeling isolated.

"One of the biggest problems is that you can become very alone when you have a child with autism because there are behaviors that don't work well with big crowds," Wateurs said.

That is why Wateurs relentlessly volunteers for Autism Speaks. She knows the more we all know about autism, the better for everyone.

"Their block, their obstacle is their nervous system is running all the time causing them to have to take that step back from you. You're thinking it's isolation or them not wanting to be in your life, but that is not true. They want to be in your life, but we're going to have to learn as a community how to bridge that gap. And that's what I am hoping to do," Wateurs said.

“You don’t have to have an autism connection,” said Karrie Daponte, walk organizer. “People assume they shouldn’t come because they don’t have connection but that’s what this event is for… the walk is all about learning to accept them [people with autism]. Not just include them, but accept them.”

For the event, Fendley Park will feature ...several vendors, ...prize draws, live music, and free food/refreshments.

Daponte said that the Autism Speaks Canada Walk is a judgement free space and a great opportunity for children with [various challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorders] to feel welcome and have fun.

“A lot of [those closest to children with Autism] don’t feel comfortable taking the kids up in the community… but this is somewhere where everybody can go,” she noted.

Her team shirt for the autism walk reads “Born to Stand Out”...

The walk has been made possible through many generous sponsors in the community who have both donated monetarily and offered products in-kind.

“...it’s a community event for everyone… all ages,” Daponte noted.

Queen’s University students hosted the first-ever Autism Speaks Canada walk at City Park on Sunday morning.

“We saw that Queen’s didn’t really have the support that was necessary for autism in the Queen’s and Kingston communities, that’s what we felt,” Michael Turner, co-president of the Autism Speaks Canada chapter at Queen’s University.

The Queen’s club was founded two years ago, and this is its first year hosting the national fundraising walk.

The club hosts events during autism awareness week in April.

“We’ve been trying to raise awareness and fundraise money,” Turner said.

Turner has spent much of his life volunteering alongside his mom working with children on the spectrum.

He co-founded the club with his co-president, Jacob Portnoff.

“I’ve met a lot of great children that are on the spectrum, and I’ve seen that they need more [assistance], and not a lot of people truly understand how important it is and how prevalent it is in society,” Turner said.

The club has around 80 members, Turner said. Those members not only raise funds for Autism Speaks Canada but also volunteer in the community with organizations like the Maltby Centre.

“We volunteered last year with the Limestone District School Board. We’ve had our volunteers in there getting first-hand experience with children on the spectrum,” Turner said.

Turner hoped the event would raise [a small but significant amount] by the end of the day. The money goes to Autism Speaks Canada.

The walk will take place again in 2020.

Every April, people around the world join together to raise awareness as well as increase understanding of people with autism.

Raymond Elementary School will be recognizing this day on Thursday, March 31. Students are invited to wear a BLUE shirt on Thursday and bring a small donation to go towards the Walk For Autism campaign. Together as a school, we will be participating in a walk to show our support.

Autism Awareness Day is a day to recognize all those individuals around the world who live on the autism spectrum. ...Our school will be wearing blue on April 1 in support of understanding and acceptance for people with autism. (Actual day is April 2).

Autism spectrum disorder ...and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention, and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances.

Each individual with autism is unique. Many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music, and academic skills. (austimspeaks.org School Community Tool Kit)
