What makes a person great?
January 12th marked the birthday of a great man who changed the course of history here in the United States. Thirty-nine years later, just down the road from our XS lab, in Memphis, TN Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. His murder reverberated around the world and with a deep sense of loss and injustice there was anger and trepidation, but perhaps most important an opportunity for real change.
We celebrate Dr. Kings birthday on Monday January 20th here in the United States. Dr. King hungered for a world where respect was based on the action of the person and never on the color of their skin. Where people lived in peace and unity and love was the order of the day.
So what makes a person great anyway? Is it the deeds he does in his life, the words he says, the people he associates with? Should we consider his political affiliations, his religion, perhaps the color of his car? As intrusive as this all might sound, there are certainly aspects of all these that do make the man a man, but why does history remember some men as great while others are forgotten?
I believe this question can be answered with some of the following traits; A man who lives with passion and cause, a dreamer, someone who follows their heart, he leaves value and is genuine. A man who is respected and shows respect. For me these are all the traits of a great man
Perhaps Bessie Anderson Stanley said it best when in 1904 she penned “What is success?”

“To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one’s self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived—this is to have succeeded.”
I very recently experienced a radical transformation that changed my perspective of the world I was creating for myself. This newsletter is a little different in that I would like to lead you to a forum post on this topic. When you arrive you will see just how personal of an experience it is to me, how I came to the conclusions I did and how you can too. Please see my post on our community forum here: What makes a person great? I share one of my most personal and emotional experiences with you in the post.
