  • Hair. Wigs anyone?

So what are your thoughts on wigs? Love? Hate? Never gave it much thought?

I'm not as crazed over them as pheromones, lol, but I have a fun rotation.
I have them for fun, and for change of pace.
I first began buying them when I went organic and chopped off all my color damaged hair and wanted something in the in between.

If you don't know, I'm a huge fan of anime, so I like lots of color. I couldn't imagine the boredom of a life relegated to organic and untouched hair. But I wanted to be cleaner and healthier where I could and the chemicals I used on my head was a no brainer place to start.

I knew I would miss the variety of color.
Of course, I could still change style and length but color and texture (Yeah, I wanted to be chemical and damage free, no color, no heat, no curling, no straighteners...) That can be very limiting. Or at least it was so for me.

    Enter, wigs.

Long, short, colors (the normals and the nots ) real hair, synthetic hair, lace, monofilament...it's its own world. But what a fun world!

My fun journey into wigs actually became practical when a good friend found out she had cancer. I was able to help her transition through losing her hair due to chemotherapy. I've since learned so many things about different causes for hair loss and how wigs can be a real boost for women who feel like they've lost their femininity when they lost their hair. That side is very rewarding, helping someone feel glamorous and womanly during such a very self conscious transitional period.

It was fun when my current Mr learned about my "play" hair and initially thought it would be a turn off until he saw a few pixie cuts on me and really liked it

    So. Anyone out there.

Wigs? Yes? No? Experiences? Products? Favorite purchases?

I am not a wig user, and I think I need to go out of this thread before you talk me into buying that.

The way you described wigs, I thought you were talking about something else, lol.

I wear wigs. It's to protect my natural hair than it is for fun. I love being able to take it right off when I get home from wherever I came from.

      What may that have been?

It is a great way to protect your hair while growing it out!

Mr Right, when initially introduced, believed I had just gotten a new style and lamented that I'd cut off my long tresses. When he found out I had a small rotation of wigs he wanted to know if it was my drag friends that influenced me Hahaha! Tbh, I don't have enough guy friends who dress drag to influence me there. It's really my black and mixed friends who I can really get into it with.
White women, unless they're facing a health crisis - for the most part, I've been changing minds in my sphere of influence - still look at wigs and initially think, Why? Or feel that they would be too self conscious to try them out. It's interesting because they are usually wowed by the fact that it's not real, but still weirded out by the thought of wearing them themselves.
Then I've got my cosplay friends...
But for everyday tricks and tips and styles and fun, it's my sisters who get it. The industry is getting better for us pasty white folks, but I'm so jealous of the amount of products - and great prices! - for them. Tons of styles, lengths, human hair, synthetic..There are sites/companies aimed at being "white women friendly" that have synthetics that cost nearly as much as human hair units you can find on other sites! It's crazy!

Ooops, I think I was ranting, lol. Moving on...

I didn't really get into wigs until high school, because those were some of the busiest/tiring times of my fucking life. I went natural my sophomore year and realized that I had a thick head full of natural hair. My sister used to crack on me for wanting to wear wigs (This was like 5 years ago before everyone and their mama was wearing them). She got white people hair so she doesn't understand my co-wash, detangle, part and oil scalp, part, detangle again, section, moisturize, and twisting of the hair ... It's a whole day of work in itself I haven't even gotten dressed or lotioned up yet. So I rather just get like 6 little cornrows or "French braids" and slap a wig on and look cute.

I've been wearing these mid-grade wigs, the human hair and synthetic mix blend wigs. I'm tired of those, I wore out one wig at my old shitty ass fast food job and couldn't revive it... I'm not like these chicks on YT I don't have patience, time, energy, or passion about how to make the wig look brand new so I'm about to throw that shit away. I want a cute human hair wig, one I can put on a head, wash, and comb it like HUMAN hair. I'm tired of that synthetic tangled shit. Again I have no patience, that's why I got a wig, quick.

Here are some links I have:
https://www.lacedbyrae.com (Black, Independent Owned) - I want to get this cute ass wig when I get my tax returns! ????(attached image)

I though the hybrids would be nice to try too, but was SO disappointed. You pay the extra $ for the hih but it still fails like a full synthetic, grrrr. Waste of $!

I had a girlfriend that wore wigs, She was funny looking when she'd get drunk. That wig would start to rotate, usually to the right. Earl the bartender was nice, he'd say Judy looks like she's ready to flip her wig and I'd straighten her out and she'd be good to go for a few more.

I'd normally say no but since she was nympho it didn't matter. It's not a turn on, quite the opposite. The illusion collapses and sometimes, everything else.

No, you're talking the Seventies here. She hid them and changed into them gradually like she had gotten a new hairdo. She wore very lowcut blouses and short dresses, we both drank like sailors and screwed like the kids in heat we were. Actually looking back on it, I'm amazed she kept me so distracted by so much sex that I barely even noticed.

For her, it was more about being able to go at a moments notice. We could dress and undress in seconds, crawling in and out of windows, just sex, booze, and her mom trying to stop us from imitating rabid rabbits, the drama. I don't imagine there was room for cross-dressing. That stuff was still hidden, it existed but almost nobody was out of the closet. People still got beatings for that and the whole of society turned the other way.

Wigs were on the down low too, even porn was just pictures of boobs, I met her in coveralls and she a babushka. I coming out of the garden and her coming out of some house cleaning.

                          Amen!
When I began dipping my toes in the wig realm years ago, my mom pulled out something from back in her day. O. M. No way! It was bad. R.E.A.L. bad. Curly, ashy and she absolutely loved it, still, lol. It looked like it had been packed away since the 70s! God bless her...
She told me when I was over recently that she liked my wigs but prefered my natural hair. Thing is, she was referring to my hair at that moment, and I was wearing a wig! Fooled my own mama! Smh...

Some women have pigment under their eyes, dark circles? Instead of under the eye, my eyes have some pigment right at the edges below the brow bone, where you might shade for a slightly smokey eye look? A friend asked me what I used, that she loved the color. When I told her I was make up free, you could have picked up her jaw off the floor. It is odd, but handy, lol. Natural taupe shadow!

I think some of it is...
                                    - ignorance on the topic, including how to's.
                                    - Self conscious that people would know it wasn't their hair.
                                    - an association that you would only wear them if you had to (due to some sickness).
                                    - cost.
                                    - Insecurities about how others would react or perceive them...there are always ingnorant people and haters but I've long since stopped caring about anything those types have to say...
                                    - have some belief that they just couldn't"pull off the look"
                                    - fear that if will fall off or blow away in the weather, lol

I've known women with skin conditions, or genetics (receding hairline or balding) that would love to have more hair and who love the idea, but just aren't willing to try them. They think it's a fine idea, but seem to believe you have to have some special skill to wear them.
Some is laziness. You have to pick it out, take care of it, store it, wear it...hell, we do that with shoes, clothes and accessories. Why not hair? They spend money on extensions, colors, cuts tons of hair products... You can purchase wigs in lighter colors and color them to fit you at your salon (if you trust them, lol) I wonder if it's overwhelming to learn about it?
It IS odd, because I get so many compliments followed by an awe-like response. They want to pet me, lol, touch the hair. I've even let some give a tug so they know it won't just fall off. There really is a chasm of ignorance as far as wigs are concerned.
Like I was asked, what happens when your wig gets wet? Eh, it gets wet It won't melt or evaporate or get ruined. Strange. Needs some myth busting for sure.

When I worked in Richmond there was a deli/convenience store but when I went inside, 3/4 of the walls were covered in wigs. I'd never seen anything like it. I bought some cheap lunch meat that I'll never forget, and those wigs, surreal. The texture on wigs is too coarse and stiff for white girls, I think.
