A [large] crowd ...turned out to the UNCW Track and Field Complex Saturday morning for the 2022 Coastal Walk/Run for Autism.

Hosted by the Autism Society of North Carolina, the event helps raise funds for programs and services to improve the lives of individuals with autism in southeastern North Carolina.

[Many] people registered for the morning’s running and walking events, which included a [running event that went through] the UNCW campus and a 1-mile fun run/walk around the track. Several members of the Seahawks’ Men’s Basketball team spent time with the crowd, posing for pictures with fans.

Many providers set up information booths next to the track, where they were able to answer questions on their services that covered physical and developmental areas.

Organizers say they expected to raise more than $50,000 from the event for the Autism Society of NC, which is the leading statewide resource organization serving people across the autism spectrum throughout their lifetimes. Proceeds will stay in this area to help children and adults with autism learn new skills and make friends, allow families to attend workshops or support groups to better care for their children, and provide adults with autism the tools they need to become employed and build fulfilling lives.

WECT was a sponsor for the event.

To the east, the Autism Society of Maine is a Winthrop, Maine-based nonprofit that attempts to promote lifelong access and opportunity so that individuals affected by Autism can become participating members of their communities. This includes children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Maine...
A step in the right direction- that was the feeling Sunday in downtown Bangor as folks participated in the 20th annual Walk for Autism.

What made this even more special is that for the first time in three years, it was an in person event.

[Many] people participated in the [Autism Walk.]

In addition to the walk, there were vendors, games and prizes

Organizers of the walk say the pandemic has been especially hard on the autism community.

”A lot of our children or our autistic adults, they’re used to having in person therapies, they’re used to being in school. That one-on-one,” says Cathy Dionne, Executive Director, Autism Society of Maine. “They don’t understand sometimes the social cues that happen online, by video. Or they can’t sit still enough to sit in front of a computer.”

Dionne adds while in person instruction is returning, staffing shortages are preventing some [individuals impacted by Autism] in Maine from receiving the services they need.

Everyone is welcome to join in, whether you’re a seasoned walker or not. There’s always a good turnout and a really special atmosphere.

“By helping people to understand autism better and to appreciate the diversity of the autism spectrum, we can all help create a more accepting society that works for autistic people.

A walk in Spokane Valley [attempts] to benefit individuals ...affected by autism spectrum disorders.

The Inland Northwest’s ... [Steps for Autism Walk] is scheduled for Saturday...

Organized by the Northwest Autism Center, the [Autism Walk] will start and finish at Mirabeau Meadows Park South shelter and will follow the Centennial Trail through Spokane Valley. All ages and ability levels are welcome to participate in the event.

“Increased awareness leads to improved health care, education, ...and perhaps more significantly, expanded relationships and a sense of belonging for the individual living with autism and [those closest to them],” said Dawn Sidell, Northwest Autism Center’s Executive Director.

According to Sidell, as recently as 2005 only two states in the U.S. required any kind of coverage for the treatment of autism. Today, 39 states, plus the District of Columbia have enacted insurance reform laws. Washington began inacting these mandates in 2013.

The Northwest Autism Center’s current goal is to increase the availability of newly covered treatments, and to extend access to children who have become adult community members.

“Understanding and appreciating the challenges and differences of the people around us is what defines our humanity,” Sidell said. “When we extend ourselves to understand even one individual who is ‘different’ than we are, we extend ourselves to understand people we have never met, and parts of ourselves we have perhaps never owned.”

Registration for Saturday’s Steps of Autism 5k is $25.00...

To the southwest, Tampa Bay, Florida is also home to an annual Walk for Autism Speaks...
...This Autism Speaks walk was held ...in Tampa, FL ...There were rows of tents with autism resource providers there to share helpful information and play with sensory-friendly toys and games. [Lexi Weber, center manager of the Hopebridge autism therapy center in St. Petersburg, FL] says that every detail was tailored for individuals with autism to attend and enjoy themselves. Instead of loud clapping after announcements, the Autism Speaks team provided blue pompoms to shake.

The diversity and representation from the Autism Speaks staff and vendors is what stuck out to Lexi the most. Many of the staff members were self-advocates with autism, and the DJ at the event was also on the spectrum. Lexi loved that children with autism could come to an event like this and not only have their sensory needs catered to, but also see representation in such a supportive space.

In addition to all the little details making this walk so much fun for so many, Lexi says it is also a very customizable experience. Whether you have a team or are there by yourself, you can participate in every activity. You can also walk as much or as little as you are able. Participants are free to mingle with providers, walk one lap or walk the entire time.

At the Hopebridge table, Lexi and Felicity enjoyed their time sharing the impactful resources that Hopebridge offers. Many families were interested in learning more about our unique Hopebridge 360 Care services. Lexi and Felicity shared information, played games, took fun photos, and learned more about their local autism community.

Lexi was so impressed with all of the support that the community poured into this event. She described it as a “big community hangout.”

While the 2022 Autism Speaks walks that Hopebridge sponsors have come to an end, the advocacy and support that our teams experience at these events will stick with them forever. We are already counting down the days until the next walk season! If you are seeking autism therapy services for your child, or looking to join the Hopebridge team, please visit our website to learn more!
