To the south, Baltimore, Maryland is also home to an annual Walk for Autism Speaks...
In the Khan household, every little milestone is worth celebrating, like their 10-year-old son Azeem, who has autism, learning how to answer yes or no questions.

"Now he aggressively tells us no with an attitude and I just love that he does that to us," said Fauzia Khan, Azeem's mother. "That’s a huge jump [for him] to even answer questions."

Azeem is mostly non-verbal and communicates using a device or with a few words. Fauzia says the progress he's made since being diagnosed with autism around the age of 18 months is in part due to good schools and good therapists.

"I think all of that put together and then obviously [those individuals closest to him]," she said.

"When you have the understanding of your peers and people around you, it just makes it a lot easier and that really helped," said Asim Khan, Azeem's father.

Another big milestone happened this summer when the family flew to California to visit Fauzia's parents. [In the past,] flying was very stressful for Azeem. This time, she made him a social storybook of their journey.

"I took pictures of the airport and our layover and wherever we were going, and he did amazing," Fauzia said. "It was a game changer for me for sure. It felt like a huge weight off my shoulder and now I can go visit family and not have to worry about him."

And the Khan family will celebrate another year of Azeem making progress and strides when they gather at Towson University on Sunday October 30 for the Autism Speaks walk.

"The walk is a huge thing for us, we look forward to it every single year," said Fauzia. She said they make t-shirts, have sold baked goods to raise money and are usually one of the top fundraising teams at the walk.

They credit Autism Speaks for guiding them in the right direction and connecting them to therapists for Azeem.

"There are resources out there and Autism Speaks definitely sets you up on that path for that," said Asim.

"I try to invite parents of newly diagnosed children to come and join so they can meet other people, register for the walk and get one resource, Autism Speaks, under them so they have somewhere to go," Fauzia said.

The Khans admit that when they first got Azeem's autism diagnosis, they were scared and in denial. But they put one foot in front of the other to give him the best life possible. Now, they are encouraging everyone put their best foot forward at the walk to support their son and Autism Speaks.

"Its just a great space to come out and have a good time with other families that are basically in the same situation that you are in. Not a bad situation, a good situation," said Fauzia.

The Autism Speaks walk is Sunday October 30 at the Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 11 a.m...

WMAR is a proud sponsor of the event.

To the southwest, the GoodLife Kids Foundation is a London, Ontario-Canada-based nonprofit that attempts to get kids with various challenges to experience the benefits of fitness. This includes children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Southwestern Ontario...
...GoodLife Kids Foundation, a cornerstone of GoodLife's community investment work, is dedicated to helping kids and youth with intellectual disabilities and/or autism thrive through physical activity and fitness. With many community based in-person programs on hold, the foundation is determined to help youth with special needs be active at home.

MOVE by GoodLife Kids is an adapted virtual physical activity and fitness program for youth with [various challenges including] autism, ages 12 – 21 years. MOVE is offered 3 times per week and led by coaches with expertise in delivering fitness to individuals with special needs.

GoodLife Kids Foundation introduced MOVE in 2020 to eliminate some of the barriers to participation that youth with special needs face – such as higher cost for adapted programming, lack of available programs to suit individual needs, inaccessible environments... MOVE is being offered at no cost to families, and groups are kept small to ensure each youth gets a personalized and unique experience that works for them.

Being active is an important part of every child’s healthy development. It helps kids physically – improving their strength, coordination, and flexibility – as well as socially and emotionally. Physical activity can provide opportunities to learn skills and traits like teamwork, empathy, and sharing.

Kids and youth with special needs should have the chance to build healthy, active lives – just like everyone else.

                            • The subject of the post from over a week ago was the Hope Network's Center for Autism, a West Michigan-based nonprofit that is the area's leading provider of early autism diagnosis, early behavioral intervention, and Applied Behavior Analysis therapy for learners from eighteen months of age. Hope Network's Center for Autism has locations in Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Holland, and East Lansing.

To the northwest, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is home to an annual Walk for Autism Speaks Canada. Autism Speaks is North America's leading Autism science and advocacy organisation...
...[Many] Edmontonians laced up and walked at Rundle Park on Sunday as part of the fifth annual “Walk Now for Autism Speaks” event, raising awareness and money for autism research and services.

Organizers say its the biggest walk to date.

“Our goal was to raise $180,000 and I’ll be honest – I know we’re going to surpass it,” said Marcy Oakes-Henschel, events manager for Alberta with Autism Speaks Canada.

A number of teams contributed large amounts of money to the goal, after spending countless hours raising money in different ways.

“Those teams are doing bake sales, garage sales, and hot lunches at their children’s’ schools. [They] are putting their nose to the grindstone ...to make a difference for autism and creating those big fundraising dollars,” Oakes-Henschel said.

“It shows you the heart of the autism community and what a difference we need to make.”

...“The funds that we raise here are so crucial,” Oakes-Henschel said.

“All the money is going to help so many [individuals affected by Autism, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.]”

An autism diagnosis means a stream of appointments, life changes and challenges for families.

Edmonton Mill Woods Beaumont MP Mike Lake knows firsthand what that’s like – his 16-year-old son Jayden was diagnosed with autism when he was just two and a half years old.

“When you see Jayden and get a chance to meet with him, he’s an amazing kid in his own right. He’s got all sorts of skills and abilities and uniqueness’s to his character,” Lake said.

...“A diagnosis of autism isn’t as bad down the road, it isn’t as bad as it seems when you first get the diagnosis,” Lake said.

“There are going to be challenges but there’s also a very supportive community out there that is willing to put their arms around you and embrace you as you walk through it.”

Lake said he loves seeing new faces and familiar faces come out to the annual walk, and says the autism community in Edmonton is a very encouraging and tight-knit group.

“There really is a bond that we have. We kind of know what each other is going through. Every person with autism is different but we do share that bond,” Lake said...

Sunday, [many of those individuals closest to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders] and Autism advocates walked through Riverfront Park for the Autism Awareness [Walk.]

One participant said he's seen the event grow each year. He said seeing more and more people show out to the annual walk reminds him what a community can do when it works together.

“This year, compared to four years ago, was twice the amount of people we had four years ago," Caleb Rinard said. "And to me, that inspires me. Because it means we can come together as a community. And we can put on events that actually matter and bring people light when they have darkness. I appreciate how many people put the effort into [being there] and showing that they actually care and they understand what people go through.”

In addition to the walk, participants were also able to visit resource and information booths. One of those booths and organizers of the event is the Northwest Autism Center.

..."[The Northwest Autism Center clients] don't get to go out and do this very often, [Gillian Brundage, center clinical supervisor,] said. "This gives them the opportunity to get out and enjoy a beautiful day."

                                        Brundage said autism is everywhere.

...Spokane mom Alexandra Mackleit is no stranger to autism. Her five-and-a-half-year-old son, Tyacke, is non-verbal.

Mackleit said even though Tyacke can't tell her how much he loves the annual walk, she said he shows it in other ways.

“He has a button on his tablet there’s a separate folder that he took for a show and tell at school and he said 'hi I’m tyacke, I’m 5 and a half and my favorite thing to do is take a walk with [those individuals closest to me]," Mackleit recalled. "So this is the one day a year we can do all the balloons and all show up for him.”

Mackleit said she is thankful for the community and [those individuals closest to her son]...

"It takes a village," Mackleit said while holding back tears.

Mackleit said ...having simple walks like Sunday's event gives people a chance to do something big by doing something small like walking.

...At the end of the [Walk], participants walked ...to get water bottles and visit vendor booths.

Event organizers said over 400 people walked at the annual Autism awareness 5k on Sunday. Participants said they've seen the event grow each year.
