Summer Love

Hello friends,
A very dear friend of mine posed a question to me and I’d like to share it with you also. Imagine yourself somewhere in the future having a conversation with your now self. You lean back in your chair and ask your future self if there was some bit of advice, some defining moment in your life that you could do better or change to impact the quality of life of your future self.
I was about to answer when my friend put her finger to my mouth and said shhh. Just take the time and think about that for a while Steve O. There really isn’t a right or wrong answer.
Over the course of a couple weeks quite a few answers came to mind. If I had just practiced hitting that baseball a little bit more as a kid. What if I didn’t join the Army when I was 17? Maybe I could have saved more money and not gone on that vacation.
As I reflected there were lots of emotions, memories, many chuckles, but most of all a feeling of gratitude came over me. There was a time in my life that very question would have provoked deep regrets in me. All the things I could have done better, been better at, tried harder, studied more… Something had changed in me though and I now reflected on these very events and rather than feeling regret, I was grateful.
I remembered the time I hitched a ride to Maine just because I wanted to see it for myself. I had little money and certainly not the right clothing for a winter spent hunkered down in Maine. I survived and am ever grateful to know I really don’t like cold weather. I remember the time I sold bottles of water at Grateful Dead shows traveling the West Coast when I was a broke college kid.

When I look back at all the things that have changed my life I realize there was an important one that I could have just as easily walked away. There was a girl who was very drunk as her friend attempted to walk her to their car. She was falling down and it got to the point where it was noticeable and a couple of shady characters were watching. I decided to step in and practically had to fight off the guys who were preying on the helpless drunk girl.
The other day, one of those girls, a friend of mine posed a question to me and today I shared it with you too.
There’s a lot going on in the store and I am super happy to share that with you today.
